This day was my first time to have shared my experiences with some of the residents during our group discussion regarding the poem: Please Listen to What I am not Saying”. I appreciated this literary very much and sort of relate to it… actually, others too. The poem was about a person who is trying to hide his/ her real self thru wearing a lot of masks. I think everybody has their different personalities in different settings. We are different when we are at work, or in school, and even at home just only to make ourselves favorable with the people around us. The favorite line was the 2nd to the last one.
I dislike hiding, honestly,
I dislike the superficial game I’m playing,
The superficial, phony game,
I’d really like to be genuine and spontaneous and me.
We are compulsory hiding in order for us to make other people accept what we are. We conform because we live to their expectations. We are not who we really are but we are like this and that because it is how the world treated us. We conform and play the game because we fear the fact of rejection. We were chameleons trying to adapt the colors of what our environment is but in the end we lose the real us: the person behind the thousand masks. We do not want to hear their negative responses on how they looked at us as we are what we really are. We feel that upon revealing the real person on the mask, we might be refused and be alone. We are in need of acceptance and not with their rejections. But in the end, I love the real me. I am different with anybody else and I don’t mind what they look upon me because I believe that I can’t please everybody. And… so what?!? Thank God for this day! Thank You for making me realize the value of who I really am. Smiles.
